July 4th and Boar Creek

In Granddaddy's picture collection, I came across some photo's of some Goose Creek Islanders spending the day at Boar Creek on a July 4th in the early 1960's.  I asked Mom about this and she said that in years past, it was a tradition to go to Boar Creek for the July 4th holiday.
On the morning of July 4th, everyone would gather at their various boat docks, load their boat with coolers, food, chairs, towels, anything that would be needed for a day of fun.  The lines would be throwed and folks would take ride to Boar Creek beach.  The kids played in the water all day while the older folks enjoyed a day of fellowship and celebration.
Here are some pictures from a July 4th celebration at Boar Creek.  Please feel free to share any stories and memories of this tradition.  Wouldn't it be wonderful to revive the July 4th Boar Creek tradition again?

Who is the Ugliest?

This story is recounted from several community members (past and present) who have told it over the years - it has even been told in Carteret County.  The story is by no means intended to offend any body, person or family but just a reflection of the numerous stories that we have all growed up with - a piece of the past.

Back in the early days, folks would sail up the Pamlico River to Washington for goods, supplies and to barter or trade.  Ras and Monroe Williams had sailed up to Washington one day.  While they were there, Monroe stopped in to one of the shops along the waterfront to purchase some supplies.
The shopkeeper struck up a conversation with Monroe and eventually told him, "You know what?  I'll give you this here barrel of flour if you can find me somebody that is uglier than you are!"
Monroe said, "Hold on, I'll be right back."  A few minutes late Monroe showed up with Ras and collected the barrel of flour!!
I guess Monroe knew how he could win that bet!

You Might Be a Redneck?

From Pate Boat Yard Blog August 2008

Undeterred by the fact that neither one of them has a driver's license , these two young fellas were bound and determined to get their new lawn mow from Hobucken over to South Creek. Being natural-born watermen, they never thought twice about putting it into the skiff and taking off with it, regardless of the fact that it was blowin a gale out of the NE. Not sure yet how wet they got, but am absolutely sure they got there and suspect that if more young folks had boats we'd all be a lot better off.

Quick, Get the Flit Can!

Photographed by User:Bullenwächter

How many of you know what a Flit Can is?  I can almost guarantee that every household on Goose Creek Island from the 1930's well into the 1960's had one.  This bug spraying gun was used quite regularly for mosquito's, flies or whatever may have come into it's line of fire.

The Flit insecticide was invented in the late 1920's by chemist Franklin C. Nelson and was manufactured by the Standard Oil Co.  Unknowing to the chemist or the company, but it's lethal ingredient DDT would become known for it's negative environmental issues.

The only Flit Can I can remember was at Grandmama Elma Potter's house.  I don't think I ever saw it used, but I remember is sat on the floor behind the kitchen door.  When I mentioned my theme for today's story to an Islander, this is what I was told: "I remember you had to take the Flit Can to the outhouse so you could sit in peace!"
