This story is recounted from several community members (past and present) who have told it over the years - it has even been told in Carteret County. The story is by no means intended to offend any body, person or family but just a reflection of the numerous stories that we have all growed up with - a piece of the past.
Back in the early days, folks would sail up the Pamlico River to Washington for goods, supplies and to barter or trade. Ras and Monroe Williams had sailed up to Washington one day. While they were there, Monroe stopped in to one of the shops along the waterfront to purchase some supplies.
The shopkeeper struck up a conversation with Monroe and eventually told him, "You know what? I'll give you this here barrel of flour if you can find me somebody that is uglier than you are!"
Monroe said, "Hold on, I'll be right back." A few minutes late Monroe showed up with Ras and collected the barrel of flour!!
I guess Monroe knew how he could win that bet!
A tribute to those folks who call Goose Creek Island home. This collection of stories, memories and current events remind us of who we are and reflect the spirit of our coastal way of life.

You Might Be a Redneck?

Undeterred by the fact that neither one
of them has a driver's license , these two young fellas were bound and
determined to get their new lawn mow from Hobucken over to South
Creek. Being natural-born watermen, they never thought twice about
putting it into the skiff and taking off with it, regardless of the fact
that it was blowin a gale out of the NE. Not sure yet how wet they got,
but am absolutely sure they got there and suspect that if more young
folks had boats we'd all be a lot better off.
